What are the differences between aluminum and stainless steel expanded metal machines?
Both aluminum and stainless steel expanded metal machines function as integrated punching and shearing machines, primarily producing expanded metal. However, due to the significant differences in hardness and density between the raw materials they process, RKM engineers design and manufacture these machines with specific differences in structure, punching tools, punching force, and control systems.

1. Machine Structure
Stainless Steel Expanded Metal Machines: Because stainless steel’s hardness, density, and strength are significantly higher than aluminum, stainless steel expanded metal machines typically utilize a cast steel body for enhanced stability, ensuring high strength, stability, and precision under intense punching and shearing pressures.
Aluminum Expanded Metal Machines: Aluminum is a relatively soft and lightweight metal, making it easier to process than stainless steel. Therefore, aluminum expanded metal machines have a simpler overall structure and are lightweight.
2. Punching Tools
Stainless Steel Expanded Metal Machines: The punching tool is a critical component in both drawing and cutting. Due to the high hardness of stainless steel, the punching tool must be made of a high-strength, wear-resistant alloy steel for a long service life.
Aluminum Expanded Metal Machine: The punching tools are made of ordinary alloy steel and undergo precise machining by RKM engineers to ensure mold quality, extend service life, and enhance the quality of the finished mesh.
3. Punching Force and Control System
Stainless Steel Expanded Metal Machine: Due to the high tensile strength of stainless steel, greater punching and shearing forces are required to cut and stretch the mesh into a regular pattern. Therefore, this machine is typically equipped with a higher-power main motor and transmission to provide sufficient power, resulting in higher energy consumption.
Aluminum Expanded Metal Machine: Requires less power, allowing the use of a lower-power motor, resulting in lower energy consumption.
4. Lubrication and Cooling System
Stainless Steel Expanded Metal Machine: Stainless steel generates high heat during processing, causing significant mold wear. Therefore, a more comprehensive lubrication and cooling system is typically installed to effectively reduce tool and material temperatures and ensure the quality of the expanded metal.
Aluminum Expanded Metal Machine: Because aluminum generates relatively little heat, the lubrication and cooling system requirements are less stringent than those of stainless steel Expanded Metal Machines, which does not affect the quality of the expanded metal.
Summary
While both machines operate on the same core principle of producing expanded metal through punching, shearing, and stretching, they differ in their structure, punching dies, power systems, and cost. Stainless steel expanded metal machines are heavy and expensive due to their ability to process tough materials. Aluminum expanded metal machines, on the other hand, are lightweight, simpler, and relatively affordable.
When choosing an expanded metal machine, the type and thickness of the raw material you’re processing, as well as the specifications of the finished mesh, will determine the type of machine you need.
